Hagia Sofia

Dear friends, what should I say, what should I write? I feel I have nothing to add to what has been said about Hagia Sofia. Nothing surpasses her in size, in beauty, in sacredness. It is better to just let a few captions help you enjoy the pictures.

Kyllä, jännitti astua sisään Isoon Kirkkoon. Ihon alla kihelmöi sukupolvien kaipaus. Olinko tulossa pyhiinvaeltajana, ikonimaalarina, valokuvaajana vai turistina?
Onneksi sisällä oli käynnissä mittava korjaustyö, poravasara karjui ja turistit höpöttivät kaikilla baabelin kielillä... siinä kyllä karisi liika hartaus.

I did feel a bit nervous when I stepped in to Hagia Sofia. Was I there as a pilgrim, a iconographer, photographer or tourist?
Fortunately there was a huge restoration going on, a electric drill was roaring and the tourists were babbling in all the languages of Babylon...
this shook of any excess piety.

Vanhoilta mestareilta on tässäkin paljon opittavissa.

I used to think that a mosaic is a mosaic, and copying it by painting would be silly. Spending some time studying the Hagia Sovia and Chora walls made me rethink - Some of the materials used, for example malachite, hematite and lapis lazuli are the very same minerals you can find in almost every iconographer´s paintbox. In a mosaic the final colors are mixed in the eye of the spectator.
A painter has a lot to learn from these masters.

Kuvasin kaikki Deesiksen tekstit. Täydellisen kaunista typogafiaa.
I photographed all the texts of the Deesis. Perfectly beautyfull typography.

Ristejä, ristejä kaikkialla, osa peitettyjä, irroitettuja, rikottuja, mutta silti siellä!
Crosses, crosses everywhere, covered, severed, broken, but still there!

Ehkä se oli tällaista, liturgia silloin aikanaan? Hovinaisten supatus, kansan kuhina ja pyhien houkkien hölötys sekoittui kuoron ja papiston ääniin. Kuva otettu paikalta, josta keisarinna seurasi liturgiaa.

Maybe it was like this, the liturgy in the old days? The whispers of the noble ladies of court, the sound of the bustling crows and the blabber of the holy fools mixing
with the voices of the choir and the priests. The picture is taken from the place where the empress used to follow the liturgy.

Kissa nimeltä Sofia. Kun turistilauma oli kuvannut häntä tarpeeksi,
hän tuli armollisesti puskemaan minua. Olen etuoikeutettu.

A cat called Sofia. When the flock of tourists were done photographing her,
she walked up to me to say hello. I am most privileged.

Lisää tietoa löytyy englanninkielisen Wikipedian artikkelista sekä Hagia Sofian museon omilta sivuilta, tosin luokattoman huonolla englannilla ja toimimattomin linkein. Artikkeli mosaiikkien historiasta on lukemisen arvoinen.

More information on Hagia Sofia here and from the Hagia Sofia museum website, which unfortunately is written in bad English and has broken links. Here you find a wiki-article on the general history of mosaic art.
